Masking in CS4 Premiere Pro
Posted by Corinne Friesen on April 15, 2022 at 3:54 amYes – I know, ancient times. I can’t change that I’m working in CS4.
Is there some way to do masking in CS4 Premiere Pro? There doesn’t seem to be an Ellipse tool or polygon tool or pen tool for Opacity.

April 15, 2022 at 4:57 pmHey Corinne,
Depending what it is that you want to mask, you may have to go to Photoshop or After Effects.
Some of the effects within CS4 may have masking tools, but nothing close to what you find in PPro today.Don’t know if the CS4 manual is any good, but Adobe has got it stored here:
https://help.adobe.com/archive/en_US/premierepro/cs4/premierepro_cs4_help.pdfI have searched, and there is 67 mentions of “mask” but only on page 318 of 491 is there something that might be relevant.

April 15, 2022 at 8:06 pmThere are no masking tools in CS4.
What are you trying to mask?
Most of the times the track matte key was used.

I’m trying to mask part of a person’s body as they move. So something static won’t work. But you make me wonder if maybe Track Matte might have a way. That looks like a rabbit hole, but might be my only option. I’ll see what this can do. -

April 15, 2022 at 11:00 pmHey Corinne,
Do not try to “mask part of a person’s body as they move” in PPro CS4, as it was never built for it.
Even in the latest version, PPro 2022, I would either use BorisFX Mocha Pro (or same inside a Continuum effect), or jump over to After Effects and use the built in tracker, or Mocha.
Depending on your hardware, you can “hire” either on a 1 month licence – maybe even use a free trial, might be worth exploring.
But PPro CS4 is not likely to give you the desired result.
Sorry.
