Keying out burning paper
Hi, I’ve got a client that wants to create a paper burning effect transition to reveal an image underneath. The video footage was shot against a black backdrop, which is making the keying job much harder! The only way I can think to do this is to rotoscope every frame of the ‘hole’ created by the burn, and then overlay the transparent flame over the top (see second image test). The trouble is, this is very time consuming! Anyone have any other suggestions for how to do this cleanly? Thanks!

Have you tried just using an add transfer mode? Or if that doesn’t I would try using the extract effect, setting the extract to the blackest blacks and invert it.

Forget the Add Transfer mode…I wasn’t thinking right. just try extracting black inverted, adjusting the softness to smooth the edges. Then add a matte choker effect and mess with the softness a little. I attached a quick project I made from your picture.

“I tend to use UnMult from Red Giant, but you can also use native tools.
Apply the Channel Combiner effect. Set its “From” property to “Max RGB” and its “To” property to “Alpha.” This will take the brightest of the three color channels and use its value for the alpha channel.
Then apply the Remove Color Matting effect (keep the default background color of black). This will eliminate black fringing in partially transparent areas.
