Questions for DaVinci Resolve and Macbook Pro M1 Users
Hello all, I will be purchasing an M1 Macbook 14″ Pro soon and will be jumping from PC to Mac. I am using two 27 inch monitors. I will be shooting mostly 4K 8bit and some 10bit content. Some Fusion FX and a lot of Color Grading I have a few questions and I would appreciate any suggestions. Will 512GB SSD be enough internal storage? Or do I need 1TB of storage? Is 16GB of memory enough. Are you editing from the internal storage or from and external storage? Are you using multiple monitors and if so are you still using the Macbook as a third monitor?

I’ve had MBPs since the 15″ days and all have had the stock 16GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. I extensively use them for Resolve grade and export dailies.
I also have an iMac Pro with 32GB RAM, and a M1 MBP 13″ with 16GB RAM 1TB SSD.
While transcoding on my Intel 15″ MBP and watching memory usage in Activity monitor, it find that it often comes close to or exceeds 16GB. Of course, M1 has unified RAM with is more efficient so 16GB RAM on M1 might provide better performance than 16GB RAM on Intel.
Still, if you can afford it, get 32 GB RAM.
As far is SSD, even in that, I’ve found 512 GB SSD for video work involves quite a bit of housekeeping and copying out to external disks. If you can, get 1TB internal SSD at least.

All media for video editing should be put on a fast external HHD, or SSD, not your system drive.

I have a Synology NAS with a 10 Gbit card and connected to a 10 Gbit switch. I have two 500gb ssd drives set at raid one which I can edit off of.

Remember you must place all of your media on an external HHD, or SSD… This is important.

Recently set up a client with a 13″ m1 macbookpro and it only has 2 thunderbolt ports and will only support 1 external display. Not sure if this is true for the 14″ model you’ll be purchasing…I worked around this by getting an owc thunderbolt 3 dock which can provide power to the MBP and I connected an external monitor using the minidisplay port on the thunderbolt dock. And we purchased a BMD device the name of which escapes me at the moment that will convert the second thunderbolt port to either SDI or HDMI for a full screen video output. Works great from within Premiere and Resolve.. Maybe there’s another workaround, but did a fair amount of research and this seemed to be the only way…

I agree with the other answers about having your media on fast external SSDs. Most size recommendations for an internal SSD are to have at least twice the amount of space you’ll need for the system and apps. I have an M1 Mac Mini with over 300GB of apps & OS, so chose a 1TB SSD.
Your 14” MBP will have 3 Thunderbolt ports, each with its own controller which means 40Gbps for each. As another suggested, a Thunderbolt hub will breakout all the connections you’ll need. I have the OWC TB hub which has 3 TB ports (a 4th is the connection to your computer) and a USB port.
I believe Hyper just released a hub that plugs into the two TB ports on the left and splits out 7 or 8 connectors including an HDMI ( I think). When I saw it, they were offering a big pre-order discount.
