  • “Problem” using Multi-Instance clone mode and Multi-Shader

Now, I say “problem,” because it may just be the way it works and there’s therefore no solution.

I’ve got some trees. The base tree is made up of a couple of cloners with “leaves” in them and a Random effector applied. The “leaves” have a multi-shader applied to them, to give them different hues of green for a more natural look. Up to this point, everything is working as it should.

I pop that base tree into a cloner an set that to Multi-Instance so that I can actually work my scene without it freezing due to the clones. But if I leave it on Multi-Instance, and although it looks perfect in the viewport, when I render it breaks: there’s no variation in colours at all, all the cloned objects are entirely the same hue of green.

If I delete the material tag in order to be able to see if the different colours of the Effector Colour mode is applied, I see it’s only applied to 1 object (I’m assuming that base tree), while the rest are just shaded in white.

If I switch the cloner mode back to Instance, this is solved.

I’ve also tried activating the Colour Mode on the second cloner to see if that helps, but all that does is apply the different shades to the entire tree, instead of each of its segments. Ie I get trees of different hues, but each tree has a uniform hue.

So, you see, I can set the cloner back to Instance before rendering and I’ll get the result I want. But I really would like to know what’s going on and if there’s some way to keep the practicality of the Multi-Instance mode but avoid these issues.

Another thing is, if I manually make instances from that base tree and set them up manually around the scene (even if I were to recreate the same number and positions as the cloner) everything works as it should, it’s rendered with the hue variations applied, AND the viewport doesn’t lag or freeze: it’s even faster than using the cloner in Multi-Instance mode. This is another thing I don’t understand: why the cloner needs more hardware power to do the same thing that manually setting up multiple instances does?
