Portrait orientation – remove black margin
Posted by Jim Lightfoot on December 2, 2021 at 11:08 pmIf I import a vertical oriented video from a smart phone how do I remove the black margins to export it with the margins? I’ve looked online for a solution but its all confusing.

December 3, 2021 at 12:45 pmYou could place a duplicate the clip on top of your original in your timeline, scale up the bottom clip. You could then blur the bottom clip.
Or you could place some sort of graphic behind your vertical video to fill the black space.
Or you could just leave the margins black.
Finally, you could scale up the video, but you’ll lose a portion of you image and gain lots of crunchy imagery.

December 4, 2021 at 1:56 amOK – so there’s no way to crop it so it behaves and exports a vertical oriented clip? I have to just put up with the horizontal format as it is?

December 4, 2021 at 6:06 amIf you want to export the timeline for vertical viewing, set your project preferences to the output resolution you want eg. 1080×1920.

December 6, 2021 at 11:22 amOK I’ve worked it out now, for anyone else interested:
1. Get the dimensions of the original eg 1080×1920
2. In Project settings or Timeline settings window > Timeline resolution: – enter these values into the custom values fields
3. Do the edits etc
4. In the Deliver tab, select the preferred output eg YouTube 1080p
5. Enter custom resolution values as per imported/setup, eg 1080×1920
6. Render
These two setting ensure it imports and exports to the exact dimensions and orientation of the original.
