Which Colorspace Should I be working in?
I’m about to start editing a short film shot with the Sony Fs5 and we shot RAW…I have some VFX shots I need to edit in AE, but have no idea what color space I should be working in?
I’m mostly using AE for motion graphics for the most part.
I’ve read up on colorspace and color profiles in AE and seem even more confused :/
Is there a standard I should be choosing if my final output will be for YouTube and Vimeo (the web)?
Ideally my workflow will be to add the VFX in AE and do color grading in either Premiere or Speedgrade.
Any help is much appreciated!

i can tell you right now that premiere coloring is only in rec. 709 0-255. if you want other colorspaces, you’ll need to export xml to davinci.
youtube and vimeo only use sRGB anyway which is just rec. 709 with 0-255 instead of 16-235 which is legal rec. 709. -
Interesting…so if I’m going to do color in Premiere or Speedgrade with intent to publish on YouTube and Vimeo I should be using which of these options in AE?
1) sRGB IEC61966-2.1
2) HDTV (Rec. 709)
3) HDTV (Rec. 709) 16-235I’ve just tested each of the three I just listed and they make minimal impact to what I already was working in which was colorspace set to none.

aw yes, just set AE to none. not only will it work faster, but you won’t have to worry about it. AE will passthrough your monitor’s color profile which is sRGB or rec. 709(0-255). The FS5 uses slog 2/3 and S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Gamut3 luts which you would use the special lut to rec. 709 to normalize both gamma and color to your monitor. Both are wider colorspaces than rec.709 so unless you have a P3 or rec. 2020 monitor, there’s no point in staying in that colorspace for a master. besides, youtube only supports rec. 709 anyway.

Thank you! I was really losing my mind trying to match colors to a style-guide, and didn’t realize that by simply choosing the “none” option, I’d be all set. Much appreciated!
