  • After Effects Hangs Whenever I Click Into the Window?

Posted by Brent Taylor on April 5, 2017 at 3:53 pm

I’ve been having this problem where After Effects freezes momentarily (2-5 seconds). It happens every time I click into the After Effects panel after doing something in another panel (for example, if I’m working in After Effects, then click on a browser window to scroll down in a tutorial, and then go back to After Effects, the program will hang).

Does anyone know what to do about this? It’s pretty annoying. Some projects seem worse than others. Bigger projects with a lot of assets seem to be worse. But I’ve never had this problem on other computers even with some really big projects.

My uneducated guess would be that you are running low on RAM. What are your system specs? What are your Ae memory settings?

Hi Walter. Thanks for your help.

My RAM should be good to go at 32GB. It’s set to reserve 6GB for other applications. So usually it’s splitting RAM between AE and Premiere, and sometimes AME or Illustrator (but usually just its own or AE / Premiere).

    Here are my system specs:

    i7-6800K CPU @3.4 GHz
    32 GB RAM
    Windows 64, x64-based processor
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GPU

I would try reserving more RAM for other applications. 6 GB may be too little for your OS and whatever other applications you’re running.

Do you notice this on all projects? If not, are there any unique characteristics about this particular project, like a certain kind of footage, a specific disk drive, a unique third-party plugin, etc.?
