  Orbit Shot Church Ceiling

  Struggling with what’s the best technique for doing an orbit shot – church ceiling. Is this done is camera or in post?

  What do you mean by Orbit shot? When I hear orbit, I think of the subject in the centre of the screen and the camera rotating around in a circular path.

  If this is a shot where the camera is pointing at the ceiling and the ceiling is spinning, then it can be done in either:

  • In Camera means you get to be much closer to the centre of the image, but you’ll be relying on you to move it smoothly. There are techniques you can use, such as moving much more slowly (and speed up later) and using chalk marks to keep to semi-accurate time (or you can create a mount using automatic timers)
  • In post, you have to start quite zoomed out as when you rotate the image, you run the risk of seeing the edges, but then you get much more control of the speed and timing.
