Often when I double click a comp either in the timeline or from the browser, AE crashes, not every time, but often and reliably. This has happened on multiple projects both Team and Local. This is a new problem that I have not experienced on this system or working with AE for many years on other systems. This seems to happen more often with .psd’s converted as comps, but not always and other types of comps crash as well when I attempt to open them. I’ve tries reinstalling, restarting, creating new projects with new assets, trashing preferences. Sometimes this works for a little while, but the problem comes back. Again, I’m only getting crashes when trying to open a comp – any comp it seems. System info below. I can send a crash report as well if that helps.

    SYSTEM:

Adobe After Effects 18.2.1 (Build 8)

    MacOS Big Sur 11.4

    Mac Pro 2019

    Memory: 96 GB 2933 MHz DDR4

Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro W5700X 16 GB

What’s the pixel dimension of the photoshop file? If it is really large it could be crashing AE.

Are all the files local? I’ve experienced issues when trying to work off a server.

Thanks for your reply. The size of the media in the comps that crash varies, but some are large. The most recent comp that crashed had a psd that was 1150x1125px at 72DPI. So, not large. It’s possible that all comps that crash are referencing media that’s in Adobe CC – stored locally, but syncing to the cloud. Usually I’m working with a team project with shared media. Other editors are not getting these crashes and I’m working with much better hardware generally speaking than they are.

If you are using AE 2021 (18.**) have you tried using AE 2020(17.**)? Does the footage use effects or plugins not installed on the machine? Those are the only other things I can think of that could cause crashing. I have not utilized the newest AE because when I tried it kept crashing on me.
