Object Replacement – Lightsaber Hilt
I’ve got some footage of a lightsaber duel that I’m working on in after effects. The lightsaber effect is fairly straightforward with something like Saber from Video Copilot, but the issue I’m running into is the props used in place of lightsabers. They used white PVC pipe instead of hilts, so I would need to replace the base of the pipe with lightsaber hilts.
I could use image tracking and masking, but I wouldn’t think a lightsaber hilt stock image would look right. Any ideas on how I could approach this? Also fairly new to After Effects so I may need a bit more detail to understand.

That sounds really, really difficult to do.
Can you post a couple of frames so we can see the challenge you have. I’m thinking the only real option here would be a colour replacement to make the pipe dark grey. Other than that, you will need to use tracking and masking.

3D tracking goes from very hard to impossible, especially when if there has been nothing made during the shoot to make it easier in post.
