HP Z600 + EVGA nVidia GTX 780
Is anyone using the combination of ” HP Z600 + EVGA nVidia GTX 780 ” ?
I am about to install this display card. I can find the 6 pin feed from the long lead off the PSU. But I am having trouble figuring out the other 8 pin lead.
The included diagrams are very vague. I am not at all sure where the other power will come from. The Z600 is a different sort of animal. So please, only discuss the machine if you have one. I have tried discussing it with service guys when trying to buy power connectors for other cars( non display) and they always assume there are several of the old standard Molex plugs in there just waiting to be used.I assume both the 6 pin and 8 pin connectors on top of the card must be used. I bought the card used. It came with only the Y connector with a weird 8 pin on one end and two leads going into it with 6 receptacles( female) for 6 “pins” male,connectors.
The 8 pin was trial fitted to the card. But would ( will) take a lot of force to seat.
This card was bought specifically to use with After Effects and IS on the AE 2015 CC list.
So PLEASE don’t go there!
I have had enough arguments about CUDA etc.Thank you for looking. Thanks for any help you may think to offer.

If your PSU doesn’t have the 8 pin connector but you have free molex connectors you could buy a molex – 8 pin adapter.

Or if you have free 6 pin connectors you can use a 6 pin – 8 pin adapter.

Thanks for the reply.
However there are many different power connections on the Z600.As stated it does not have hanging leads except for one 6 pin .
I need to find a place to connect an 8 pin lead.
Until I find out the right place for that I do not even know what lead to buy.

“Get a 6 pin to 8 pin power adapter. Or, if available, get a main power cable that has 8 pin power (in addition what you need for your other peripherals). Or get a new PSU.

Oh wait. If you have only one 6 pin and you need 6 and the 8 pin then you probably just don’t have the power for that. You can’t split a power pin.

Furthermore the Z600 is a WORKSTATION.
It has plenty of power. It has a huge PSU.
It has many rails.It is finding the right one, the correct on, the correct plug of many, to connect the other power needs.
In fact the cards draw current from 3 sources. The PSU has all there. But just NOT as low hanging fruit on trees like in regular PCs.
This PSU is unlike any I have seen.
It is modular and connects to the mobo in a unique way.

It has many rails.”The Z600 is a pretty old configuration and apparently it doesn’t officially support GPU’s that need to draw more than 150 watts. I’m not sure if you can get a more powerful modular HP PSU that would do that. One alternative would be to buy a normal PSU and power up the GPU with that, but that would get a bit kludgy at best.
You should contact HP or write on the HP user forums to get better info on this.

Hi…i was facing the same issue for 6 pins. I think you should get a 6 pin to 8 pin power adapter. If available, get a main power cable that has 8 pin power.

I am sorry, I thought I had closed out this thread a year ago. But thanks for checking it out Ricky.
My HP Z600 has a dedicated non standard power supply.
I did find the correct power adapter at the store but only after finding the other connections needed hidden in a false tray of the unit.
The GTX 780 SC model I have is too long to fit in the primary slot. It works just fine in the bottom slot. I still had to remove the card stabilzer on the side cover and added some trimmed foam. It has been doing well for a year.
All monitoring utilities show it is never overstressed and plenty cool.It has done some complex AE work and plays Doom on Steam quite well.
