Avid ISIS 5000 fan problem
Hi guys,
an old Avid ISIS 5000 still going as backup of old music/sound FX library suddenly was complaning of fan error (fan 5) and sounded like mad due to fan 3 and 4 went on full maniac mode. Opening the box confirmed fan 5 was not spinning and swapping place with fan 4 and 5 still had fan 5 error, and fan 4 (now in slot 5) didn’t spin where fan 5 (now in slot 4) did spin.
Seems to be fan sensor or at least something else.Any simple solution, or time to send this 5000 chassi to spare part heaven?
Server is working and temperature seems valid around 45 C, just that it sounds so bad with two fans going maniac.

Hi Robert,
it is an old, but a rock solid piece of equipment.
Due to the fact that 2TB HDs are no longer produced, it is dying slowly.
So, in case you cannot replace the fan or repair the contacts in the enclosure, it is gone.
I would try to clean the contacts of one fan module, or try to switch all of them several times.
If this does not work, I would try to buy a spare fan module via ebay.
If this does not work, I would retire the Isis.cheers

SO – what is AVID Unity (never heard of it) – what is AVID ISIS (never heard of it) –There is ONLY AVID Nexis – there has never been another shared storage system. What you are referring to has never even existed. You have a piece of metal that is not part of the history of the video industry.

Hi Bob,
there was Isis 5000 and 5500 and 7500, before it became Nexis. This was in times of the Apple Raid.
and of course you are right, 2TB drives are still produced, but not the types certified with Isis 5000.cheers
