Constant FCPX crash – All standard solutions tried
Hey guys, I’ve been working with a project for about 2 weeks now and was bringing it into the closing stages.
Not sure about correlation / causation. But I was working in motion 5 and bringing some graphics over and suddenly FCPX began crashing.
I deleted the graphics. Removed them from my motion templates. Restarted the computer. Erased FCPX preferences. Updated to most recent versions of FCPX, Motion, and Mac OS and I’m still getting killed. Any time I open the project, I’ve got 15 seconds before it crashes out.

And as a follow-in. It seems to be pretty project specific.
I’ve opened old projects and had no issues with similar crashing.The project I’m working on isn’t horrifyingly complicated. Only like 6-7 minutes with simple transitions and a few split screens.

Do you have a trail version of fcpx installed?

Currently, yes. I’d been given fcpx by a friend a number of years ago and then was going to upgrade recently, but it gave me a three month trial so I’m currently running that.
I haven’t had crash issues In other libraries. This one just suddenly went nuts and crashes every fifteen seconds.
Any thoughts on how to attack something that’s library specific?

Try deleting the cache. Is the cache inside or outside the library?

I kept reading the error report and it seemed to say it wasn’t having issues moving and transforming something. (I could be dead wrong)But I decided to try deleting a section where I had layered up a few effects and had the image spinning on Z axis with he help of a plugin.
Cut that out and haven’t crashed since. <3

Unfortunately plugins run within the FCPX address space and any bug in any plugin can hang or crash FCPX. In the future this will hopefully be fixed as plugin vendors move their products to FxPlug 4 which can enable out-of-process plugins, thereby preventing a plugin bug from crashing FCPX: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/professional_video_applications/fxplug?changes=latest_minor&language=objc

Just so you know, you can’t legally be “given FCPX by a friend.” So there really is no viable upgrade to that version on your machine, since it’s licensed to his Apple ID account. You have to start with your own purchased copy, which is why the trial was installed.
