  Solid color fill change with layer underneath over time

  Hi everyone, I am very new to expressions in AE.

  Would anyone be able to help me figure out how to change a solid color filled shape that sits above a video clip that is meant to mask a portion of the clip below it with a color just below it? Basically, I want to hide a red colored status bar on a video clip someone took of their phone with the color of the navigation bar below it using a solid color shape. The problem is that the navigation bar which is blue, shifts to different shades over time. Hoping there is a way to use an expression to sample the shifting blue colors below the red status bar?

  Hey Ellie, this most likely would be possible to achieve. Few things:

  1. Does blue bar (in this screenshot) changes its size at some point, or only color varies, keeping size static?
  2. Do colors change instantly / popping into other shades, or transitions over time?

  The idea would be applying Change to Color effect to red bar (with Hue, Saturation and Lightness option selected, and Change By set to “Transforming to Color”), and sample source color from the bar below. Meaning – change RED to X color, sampled from a fixed current blue bar location.

  Hey Tomas,

  Thanks for the advice! I used the expression that was described in this thread that helped me get what I was looking for. But you asked really great questions, like if the colors change or pop to different shades, which they do! The blue bar does stay in the same place though. This is a great forum for newbie like me. I’ll check out the links you added as well, you have a really cool site. Thank you again!

  Hey Ellie, glad to hear you been able to figure this out, and thats for a heads up! Yet sometimes the change of tint might make color-matching off in those ‘shifting/interpolation’ moments, so use color sampling with precautions !
