  How to create matte from edges to create transition?

  I have a piece of artwork that i want to transition in with light rays.

  I want it to organically appear, just looking for some advice on using the layer that is just the artwork to drive the position of the light rays.

  does that make sense?

  I think that if you copy the artwork layer, then make it greyscale, you can use that layer as the custom source for a Gradient Wipe:

  Then drive the position of your light rays with the Gradient Wipe.
