Windows 10 PC…need to capture VHS tapes from VCR.
Posted by Joseph Coady on August 20, 2020 at 2:44 pmWhat hardware do I need to get my vcr tapes to my PC? It has been years since I have digitized so I am wondering what is good for present day standards, with Windows 10? Is there one device better than the other? Years ago I used a Canopus device, but I don’t have that anymore!

August 20, 2020 at 2:56 pmI would say it depends on what you are looking for. If you just want to capture some home videos, I’d say search for “capture rca video on pc” and get one of the USB devices that are like $50. If you need something a little better and more options as to what you can plug into it, and works well with PPro, go with a Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle for USB – about $200. Blackmagic also has an Intensity Pro PCI card with a pigtail out the back to plug a myriad of things into it, that runs around $100.
Good Luck!

August 20, 2020 at 3:36 pmWow thank you for the speedy reply! I have not captured in years so I felt rusty as to what to look for! I will definitely give this a look!

August 20, 2020 at 4:33 pmYou may want to research a TBC (Time Base Corrector) and determine whether it’s right for you (and whether you can find one). If your VHS signal is unstable and /or locks up your capture system, knowing what a TBC does will help you out a lot.

August 20, 2020 at 4:54 pmYeah after reading about the Blackmagic I kept seeing stuff about a time base corrector. Where would I get one of these? Is there a capture card that has something like that built in?

August 20, 2020 at 5:31 pmI would call B&H and describe your workflow and they might have something or at least point you in the right direction. I’m sure they have an old schooler there who knows what a TBC is and can recommend a solution.
Capture with and without a time base corrector: https://youtu.be/qJKInMUw3A8?t=213

August 22, 2020 at 6:08 pmI wouldn’t go through the hassle of buying a pro level TBC for your VHS. Best bet is to get a VHS with built in TBC off of Ebay. They made em back in the day – I think Sony. You’ll have better luck with that playing the tapes as well.
