  Keying – those painful DSLR edges :(

  Dear Abbey,

  Why do my edges look like this? Why does the shooter hate me?

  

  To be serious, we all know of the limitations of compressed color sampling (although a detailed explanation of this example would be appreciated.) The question is, what mix of techniques do you all use with keylight or other effects (extract?) to get the best out of this type of edge? What do you do in production to mitigate this?

  It all boils down to the amount of information in the chroma sampling. Here’s a good snapshot of what’s going on:

  In production, you use the camera with the highest chroma sampling rate you can get – minimum 4:2:2. Otherwise, it can be done (anything can be done), but at the cost of time in post-production.

  I add about .5 to the feather and I think it helps.
