I’m discovering that knowing how to use After Effects does not obviate the need for some graphic design education.

I’m working on a typography project and what I want to do is zoom in extremely tight on the edge of a letter to reveal the next title sitting on that edge. Moving the text in z-space didn’t work because the camera zooms past the previous text edge. Simply scaling the text has limits unless I start super huge with the 1st title element.

Any advice on the workflow for this?

My first thought is to use vector-based text (from Illustrator), and turn on the “constant rasterize” switch in the composition. This will keep the zoomed in text edge from completely aliasing, without forcing you to create really hi-rez graphics to keep the zoom-ins crisp looking.
