Quad G5 and After Effects
Posted by Brian Stetson on December 16, 2005 at 10:32 pmwith the new Quad G5 I was extremely excited thinking the speed results would be hudge, unfortunaetly it has just been very problematic. Has anyone had After effects crash constantly, and even crash the computer on the new quads? The speed is slower than the duals and there are so many bugs and crashes its horrible. Has anyone else had this problem and do you know any solutions or what might be causing this. Thanks

December 16, 2005 at 10:59 pmI gotta tell you I have been nothing short of absolutely amazed with the performance of the Quad and AE. Heck, all programs for that matter. I have been using AE to render out quite a few projects since I’ve received it, and I can’t recall any problem whatsoever. Just very, very impressed with the speed! I wish I could help you on this, but….

December 17, 2005 at 1:16 amWhen we got our G5 Quad to test Nucleo, it came with bad RAM. We had to replace the 1GB we ordered with it, then all was fine.
For some reason I think the supplier of factory RAM for this workstation (as opposed to other Apple workstations) may have dropped the ball somewhere. Have seen many other Quad owners have similar problems.
Check out – https://www.memtestosx.org/ – this may give you a clue, but be sure to follow instructions carefully.
If you are getting the dark screen asking you to power down by holding the power button (alot), or you get kernel panic (see alot of white text with black background just start scrolling across the screen), 9 times out of ten its bad RAM.
Also – if the RAM is bad – using AE will really bring that problem up. AE uses ALOT of RAM.

December 17, 2005 at 1:24 pmmine seems ok so far too. Mentally fast too. Its rendering look suite on 1080i hd 2x/3x faster than my old box was rendering same on pal sd. which is quite the jump. Old box was a quicksilver dual mind, but still, the speed of the thing is just berserk, as far as i can tell.. felt the urge to share. wee! ive got a quad!

December 19, 2005 at 1:01 amHopefully mine will arrive this week (Dec. 19-23). Just in time for Christmas. I’m upgrading from a 1Ghz DP Quicksilver. Sounds like I’m in for a treat! I ordered mine with 4GB of RAM and the GeForce 7800 GT graphics card. I’m hoping that it will make AE scream!
I’m also looking forward to burning DVD’s at better than 1x speed. And we ordered a 30 Cinema display for it as well. Pretty great corporate Christmas present eh? (hopefully I don’t have any problems with it)
