Ki PRO Newbie Question
I’m budgeting and trying to wrap my head around Ki PRO.
1) Extending life of various HD cameras by recording to PRORES.
2) Workflow advantages taking footage directly into FCP.
3) Conversions are handy.
Is Ki PRO useful for offline data wrangling, unloading SxS cards to HD?
Can someone compare Ki PRO and IO HD? There is some functionality overlap…
Also, I’m concerned that Firewire 800 is nearing end-of-life. Light Peak rumors are building.

The unit is designed to capture baseband video in to Apple ProRes.
It is not designed to handle Sony’s proprietary SxS cards or to transcode previously captured materials.A future software release will allow 3/4 express cards to be usable in the KiPro Unit, they are not enabled today.

Comparing Ki Pro and IoHD:
Ki Pro is a video recorder which works independently of a computer (though the format it records to is ready to edit for FCP). It’s initial ‘remit’ is work with cameras. It cannot be used as a video output device for a computer. It is a Pro Res only device.
The IoHD is a video Io box that is tethered to a computer. It can capture with and output video from FCP and work with other software products. Whilst it can be configured to work with other codecs IoHDs main appeal is when working with Pro Res.
Both use hardware to encode Apples ProRes.
Both have hardware up/down/cross conversion (scaling) for input and output built in.
