Output to Tape Aspect Ratio Issue
I’m confused about why my output to tape from FCP is weird.
Set-up:
1. Shot in DV
2. Captured through AJA IO (from DV deck analogue component outputs — no firewire on deck).
3. Captured as DV in FCP using AJA preset for Beta YpBpR 8-bit NTSC to DV.
4. Timeline settings:
Frame Size 720 x 480 NTSC DV 3:2
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC CCIR / DV5. Output to DV deck through AJA IO. FCP output settings to IO Preset YpBpR NTSC 720 x 486 (there is no “DV” output option.)
Issues:
A. Playback of recorded output tape through DV deck via component cable to Sony broadcast monitor is proper aspect ratio, but LOTS of artifacts on motion and scene changes.
B. Playback of same tape through DV camera with monitor aspect ratio set to AUTO and video is squeezed into a 16:9 letterbox format. Setting monitor aspect ratio to 4:3 caused video to play all messed up. Also, camera monitor display reads : SQ which I take to mean square pixel.
Here’s a clue: Output to Beta is fine, with no artifacts in playback and aspect is correct.
