I’m a recent convert to FCP from Meda 100. I’m working on my first long form project, a PBS half hour documentary. I’m using the AJA IoLA, FCP 4.5, and a G raid 320 GIg drive.

I’ve been digitizing footage at 10 bit uncompressed, thinking I could get it all in and not have to worry, but I’m not going to make it.

I’ve looked at the AJA manual for workflow suggestions, but I’m just a bit unclear.

I’m thinking about keeping my project files, including all the log information for each shot I’ve digitized, and then throwing away all the media files. If I recapture at a lower setting, edit, then recapture the finished sequence at 10 bit, that seems to be the logical way to fit it all on the hard drive.

Here’s my question: Which of the choices would you recommend for the lower quality capture? I’ve looked at the 8 bit storage demands, and I think I need to go lower than that. I’m looking for the lowest rate that still provides a good image to work with.

    Thank you very much.

Try offlining with PRO 50, though keep an eye on the field dominance when on line time comes around. If you are using lower field compression in uncompressed then use the PRO 50 codec as it is, if you are PAL then look at using upper field dominance.
A lot of people are using PRO 50 as on line, it’s quite good and uses 1/3 the space of uncomressed.

I too am a former Media 100 user. I like using DV25 as an offline codec as it gives me freedom to capture as much material as I want without being too concerned about drive space (it

I would agree with Lee. DV25 is more than enough to offline with. Honestly, you can almost online with it if it wasnt for graphics and effects….

You can however recapture just video. Once you have created a new project with media manager, with your final media, highlight every clip and select the tracks menu. This will allow you to change all the clips at once from v1, a2, to just v1. YOu can do one at a time al well.
