    Issac:
You should consider cappturing your footage with setup at 7.5 IRE. Check your settings on the DSR 45 to see if there is a menu item which allows you to “add setup” to the deck’s output. If you add setup then everything will be at 7.5 IRE and you shouldn’t have any trouble with your effects and renders.

    Good luck,

    Lee

You should be at 0 IRE inside FCP as well.

    Isaac,

The problem is that the DSR-45 isn’t adding set-up to the analog output. Io is expecting to see analog black as 7.5, so in effect you are capturing footage which is blacker than broadcast legal analog blacks. The digital DV signal doesn’t use a set-up and so blacks are at 0. Unless the video is “shifted” on output to fit into NTSC values, the video will be at 0 instead of 7.5.

When you look at the output of the Io on an NTSC scope the video has 7.5 set-up. Since no effects have been added, Io is allowing the illegal levels to pass. When you add an effect, the levels as clipped at the legal values, which means that these “crushed” blacks are flattened. The only way to avoid this is to: a) use a deck with “add set-up”, b) use a deck with an SDI card, c) use a third-party proc amp between the deck and the Io, or d) capture via FireWire.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

I would go with Oliver’s a) use a deck with “add set-up” if that is an option in the DSR45’s setup menu. Isaac, if there is an “add setup” for the DSR45 please let the forum know for future reference.
