  • Firewire card + DV camera + AJA IO?

    Hi all,

We have two AJA IO LA’s, connected to single-processor G5s (one 1.6 GHz, one 1.8 GHz). We also have (PAL) Canon XL1 and XL2 camcorders, and capture footage from them directly via Firewire (rather than through the IO’s).

So far, we’ve been switching between the two- camera for capturing, IO for editing- by unplugging/plugging the appropriate device into the computer’s rear Firewire port. As everybody here probably knows, trying to have them both plugged in at once (one in the front port, one in the rear) causes conflicts.

A few older posts/threads have suggested using a PCI Firewire card for one device, and the G5’s Firewire port for another. Would this allow us to leave both devices plugged in and switched on without any conflicts, or does it simply make it easier to switch between the two?

I’d particularly like to hear from other XL1/XL2 users that have a similar setup, but any advice/experiences would be helpful.

    Thanks,

    -Bon

We’ve be using this setup with our G5 and IO. We use an OWC firewire card. We put the IO on the G5s internal bus and everything else on the card, Ntsc and Pal decks and firewire drives. No problems with the system at all.

    Vince,

Thanks for the info. I think we’ll look into grabbing a couple of cards.
