  • Another Newbie question: offline res question

I am digitizing alot of footage for this project and need to go with low res for the roughcut.
This is coming off BetaSP via component analogue to the IO.
This is my first use of FCP offline resolutions. I digitized some footage using the stock setting for “offline” photo jpeg. That particular res is poorer than Avid’s 20:1 setting. So I tried modifying some of the settings in the stock capture preset. I attributed the bad aliasing to the fact that it was capturing at 320×240 so I changed the preset to 720×486 with the quality to to 30% on photo jpeg mode.
The quality was much better with an acceptable file size.

Problem: the captured clips (720×486 photo jpeg, quality 30%) will not play in FCP windows on the computer but DO PLAY out of the IO to a regular NTSC monitor.

Is there anyway around this? Are there better offline settings that are known to work?
I was trying to get something about half the file size of DV but without all the jaggies.

    Thanks for any info.

I tried the same thing and I believe the bottom line is that you have to use the stock Aja to Photo Jpeg preset. I’ve settled on DV resolution for offline. 13 GB per hour is reasonable for my available storage (1.75 TB) and you don’t have to look at pixelated video. BTW have you tried the Media Manager for creating an offline version for recapture. I suggest you download Larry Jordan’s excellent Tutorial and follow it step by step https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/basic_onlining_jordan.html. The media manager is confusing sticky wicket, but if you follow the steps it works well enough.

Thanks Lee, for the response. I considered using DV but I have too many hours of footage to capture and I am short on disk space until new drives arrive later in the week. In the future DV will probably be my offline res as well. I suspect you are right about sticking with the stock settings but will try experimenting again after this project is finished.
I will also send an email directly to Aja tech support asking about it. They have been very good about responding to other questions I have had since I bought the IO.

Also, thanks for the link to the tutorial. It looks very good and this will be the first time I try high rezing on FCP rather than Avid.

    Again thanks!

I avoided uprezing on FCP, until I had to, and then I picked a project that was already put to bed. While not as elegant as Avid or Media 100 it does work and I’m fairly comfortable with it now. Aja support is very responsive. Good luck.
