  • Playback problems on new IO

I am setting up an IO I purchased at NAB. I am using a Powerbook 17 with G-Raids. I have seemingly been able to capture with no problem even at 10bit, but playback is not working. Video will play for 10 or 15 seconds and then will jitter/drop frames/freeze up and then the “dropped frames” dialogue box appears.
I tried different sequence settings. Video playback fails whether it’s in the sequence or just playing in the source window. I tried digitizing with no audio and then with split audio to a second G-Raid, same problem. Also tried different “video playback” settings. Also found it interesting that the video playback setting were only “component”, no composite, no SDI. I don’t know if I am missing a setting there. It also isn’t clear if I needed to update the firmware on the (new) IO.

I know that Apple does not officially support this config, but I saw it working in Aja’s booth at NAB and that’s what prompted the purchase.

Another variable, the G-Raid (500) is down to it’s last 100meg. My understanding of G-Raids are that they are supposed to maintain proper speed throughout the stripe but maybe not.

    System details:
    Powerbook 17, 1.5mhz CPU, 1.5gig of ram
G-Raid 500 on FW800 card in the left side card slot.
The FW800 card was purchased with the drive from Medea and is their recommended card.
IO plugged into the FW400 port on the right side of the computer.
    Final Cut Pro HD

    Thanks for any info

Please clarify – this system worked great unti you got down to the last 100 Gigs of storage, or this system never played back at 10 bit uncomrpessed, even when the drives were empty?

    Please clarify.

The drive and laptop have been used with Avid DVXpress Pro and the Mojo so there is media on the drive already from prior projects plus a sound effects library that takes up about 100gig. Avid with Mojo played 1:1 8 bit on this hardware config with no problems.

Can you edit posts on this forum?
    Sorry for two posts again.
The system as described started out configured this way with the space on the drive as described. It is having this problem from the get go, and was not “working fine” and then stopped.
Sorry about the my name change too, my work computer logs me in as Sprocketz and my home computer logs me in with my name.

    Gary –
you have amazed me. Are you telling me you can do 1:1 uncompressed on a Firewire 800 drive with an AVID Xpress Pro with Mojo. I almost don’t believe you. I know that this is getting off the subject of your question, but it is “common knowlege” from AVID that the minimum configuration for 1:1 playback from any DNX product (Xpress Pro or Adrenaline) is 4 SCSI drives striped RAID 0 across the 2 SCSI busses of an ATTO or LSI host on the xw8000 or MACG5. The very fact that you could do 15:1 with a Firewire 800 drive would surprise me, but the fact that you state that you are using a single Firewire 800 drive, and successfully getting 1:1 uncompressed with AVID Xpress Pro with Mojo is unbelieveable to me.

I am going to take the liberty of posting your information on the AVID-L forum.

One of the main reasons for buying the Mojo is the ability to do 1:1. It is the older Meridian codec meaning that it is 8 bit rather than 10 bit (which I think you can now do with Adrenalin). You get 1 stream only so you have to render everything. Mojo has no SDI but does have component analogue in and out. 1:1 on Mojo is the same codec as on Meridian Avids so you can interchange the media and projects with the full size systems. I just did a project where I was given media digitized on a Meridian, cut the piece on DVXPro with Mojo and the output component to Digibeta. No problems. Avid does not “officially” support firewire for media but alot of people are using this configuration and if you go the the G-Raid info page at G-Technologies or Medea, you can see the compatability grid for G-Raid lists it as good with an approved FW800 card.

I do not consider Mojo great for broadcast due to no SDI and poor/noisy audio connections (cheapo rca connectors).

That is why I am trying out FCP and the IO, to get all the connectivity.
