Connecting coax F-video to Io?
Posted by Steve Wilson on May 6, 2005 at 3:42 pmI am trying to connect a VCR to the Io through coax cable. I have a coax to BNC adapter but can not get video from either the SDI or component inputs. Will this even work?

It sounds like you might possibly be trying to connect the RF output from the deck to the Io. The Io will not accept this kind of signal. Try to use the composite video output from the deck if it has one. Connect it to the composite video input in the Io. Be warned though, that the output from a VHS deck is usually not stable enough to feed directly to the Io. It would be best to send the deck’s video through a TBC (time base corrector) and the TBC’s output into the Io. For audio, the levels coming out of the VHS deck will be low and unbalanced. Ideally, you need a way to bring the levels up to what the IO would require and also convert them to a balanced format. Putting the VHS’s audio through a device like a Matchmaker will work nicely.

May 6, 2005 at 4:11 pmCan I connect to the Io using the RCA out connectors with RCA to BNC adapters?

May 6, 2005 at 5:18 pmYes, you can use an adapter to go from the RCA type connector on the deck to a BNC type connector in the IO. You can find them at places like Radio Shack for just a few bucks or at an electronics supply store for even less.
FWIW, “coax” cable can be either RF or baseband video. It just refers to the type of cable used; coaxial. It has a single conductor in the middle of the cable surrounded by a wire mesh forming the second conductor.

May 6, 2005 at 10:15 pmThis is a terrifying post, as this gentlemen does not understand the difference between the RF “F” connector, and the RCA composite video output of his VCR. HOW will this gentlemen know enough to download the new I/O control panel to enable the TBC Framesync functions to get the VTR to even lock up? HOW will this gentlemen know enough to use the Audio/Video Setting Capture Preset to select the correct setting to accept analog audio and composite video? You know he will have issues with analog audio levels coming directly from the VHS into the balanced inputs of the I/O.
SIR – I URGE YOU to contact your dealer, and ask for assistance and training on configuring this product, and if you bought it from a mail order house, I URGE YOU to hire someone who understands audio and video to come in and help you – at least in these initial stages. This is only the beginning of your perils into the world of professional video editing.

May 9, 2005 at 1:02 pmSIR – I do not appreciate your less-than-positive candor but do appreciate your help. I have been working with AJA and Pinnacle products and with digital video editing for several years. However, I am having trouble with this issue b/c I have never worked with VHS video before.
Thank you. Please find something more constructive to do with your time than aimlessly posting trash to people who are just asking for help.
