aspect ratio and pixel size madeness
Hi All,
I’m new to FCP and Motion (been on a DS and eQ for years). Anyway, I’m working on a project where the video footage was shot in ntsc 4×3 anamorphic. Can someone please post what settings I should be in for both FCP and in Motion so the graphics will have the correct ratio. Right now my graphics seem blurry for some reason.

In FCP: Go to Sequence, Sequence Settings and check the Anamorphic 16:9 box
In Motion: Go to Edit, Project Properties, Preset = NTSC Broadcast SD or NTSC DV. Change Pixel Aspect Ratio to NTSC D!/DV Anamorphic.

4×3 anamorphic? You mean a pillarbox on 4×3 material? Are you sure it’s not 16×9 anamorphic?

I’m not sure I understand what your saying, but yes it’s Anamorphic 16:9. See page IV-431 of the newest manual. Hope this helps.Stephen Smith

I dunno. He said he has stuff shot at 4×3 anamorphic and I thought that was a little weird. The only time I have seen 4×3 anamorphic is when you have non 16×9 material and it is going to be displayed FOR SURE on a 16×9 display.

Okay, I see what your saying. Yes your right. You can build the whole project 4×3 anamorphic using the settings I gave above and export out the project 720×480 anamorphic to compressor. Compressor will understand that the video is anamorphic and compress it 16:9 instead of 4:3. In DVD Studio Pro you can change the settings so if it is played on a 4:3 TV the TV will show the 16:9 footage with black bars on the top and bottom so it fits in the screen. Or if the TV is a 16:9 one it will fit the screen perfectly. I just finished a project doing this and it looks fantastic.Stephen Smith

Yeah, I just finished a project providing footage for some booths at Comic Con and it all was going to be displayed on a 16×9 monitor. Unfortunately half of the material was 4×3 FF so in fcp I just squeezed 33% in on the horizontal and exported reference movies and imported straight into a 16×9 project in DSP. All of my stuff is generally short form and I don’t even bother with compressor.

Thanks I figured it out. What I was having an issue with was keeping a consistent aspect ratio from FCP to Motion.
However, to clarify my description, my material was shot in SD 720×480 1.2 par(widescreen) instead of the normal ntsc .09 par. If I were to take footage and dub it over to say a digibeta tape, it would show up 4×3 and squished. So it’s still 4×3 anamorphic – the editing software FCP, DS etc, can define the par of the footage and display it as 16×9. Or in Stephen’s case Compressor and DVD studio flag the footage as having a 1.2 par so it will display correctly on the monitor.
