Kona 3 Buy now or wait
Posted by Richard Nastasi on February 10, 2010 at 9:17 pmI have a feature i will be doing the finishing on at the end of april. I’ll be renting a SR deck to assemble and then output 10bit 444 for coloring.
I have the opportunity to buy a used kona 3 with breakout box and cables for $1500 right now.
What do you guys recommend buy or wait?

February 10, 2010 at 10:02 pmGot ya. There’s always going to be the future. If you need a half price Kona3 right now, go for it. If not, pay full price for a Kona 3 later, or maybe it will be something new. If you can afford to wait, why wouldn’t you?

February 11, 2010 at 12:36 amFor $1500 for the Kona3 and BOB, I say buy it NOW! If something else comes out you would probably only lose a couple hundred bucks. In recent history things announced at NAB take a few months to hit the street. So if you wait it would most like be mid summer before you see the new product. IMO

February 11, 2010 at 1:48 amThis post is in the running for the stupidest post on the AJA Kona forum in a long time.
You are going to rent a Sony HDCam SR VTR for what – $1200 A DAY, correct ? I assume that this is not a job for a charity to benefit Haiti, am I correct ? so you are going to charge money for this job, correct ? So the VTR will be $1200 a day, and you are questioning weather $1500 for a Kona 3 is “too much money” ? Are you going to profit at least $1500 for this job ? (because if you are renting a VTR for $1200, doing a HDCam SR delivery to a major network – because who else demands SR delivery) – and are making $200 profit for the entire job, I will fly to your location and beat you to a pulp. But if you are making only $1500 for the job (and I hope you are making more), then every job after this will be GRAVY, and money in your pocket. The #1 way to buy equipment is to have ONE job pay for the equipment, and it sure sounds like this ONE job will pay for your Kona 3 (at least) – so you have to be NUTS not to buy it at this price.
BUT, if in fact, you are doing a HDCam SR job for $200 or less profit, believe me, I will punish you. You are a virus to the entire industry, and you should not be allowed to live.

February 11, 2010 at 6:33 amBob, that a crazy rant for no reason.
I never said i could not afford it nor what my im making for the job. I just wanted input if anyone thinks that AJA will come out with a new card soon. The LHI came out last year and Kona 3 has been around for a while.
I don’t want to be obsolete before i really get to use it at the end of april which happens to be after NAB.
and to your comment ” You are a virus to the entire industry, and you should not be allowed to live. ”
I think you need to look in the mirror buddy because you have issues. To Michael & Jeremy thank you for your intelligent feedback. I am going ahead with the purchase.

For the record, Bob wasn’t serious. It’s his way of prompting you on. He only showed up at my place once with a baseball bat, but I gave him a cookie and he went on his way.

February 11, 2010 at 9:14 pmI have been petitioning the management of Creative Cow to have an “insanity forum”, but they keep ignoring me. If Richard had offered me a cookie, I would have been much nicer to him.
