  ProRes Kona 3 playback settings

  Working on a ProResHQ 1080p 23.98 timeline. Bulk of footage is AVC Intra 1080p24 transcoded to ProResHQ. Some footage is 1080i 29.97.

  Using Kona3 to play out for monitoring on Panasonic LH2600 monitor.

  Seeing some pulldown issues on 29.97 clips, but not sure if the Kona is using the correct output.

  What should the kona playback setting be? Seems to work on several settings.

  if you want smooth playback you will need to

  a) convert the 29.97 to 23.98

  b) set the output to 29.97 and let the card or Fcp add the pulldown.

  your 60i clips should not show pulldown if the do not have redundant frames.

  Well, you have a frame rate problem.

  Some of your footage is 23.98. So if you are working in a 23.98 timeline, your output shoud be 23.98 (choosing the 1080psf23.98 ProResHQ easy setup will do this for you).

  If you are adding 29.97 matieral to your 23.98 timeline, it will look funny. You need to convert your 29.97 to 23.98. You can do this with compressor with varying results, or you can send it out to a place that will hardware convert it for you with something like a Terranex.

  On the other hand, you can put your 23.98 material in a 29.97 timeline and FCp will add 2:2:2:4 pulldown. It will again, look funny, but at the end of your edit you can add proper 3:2 pulldown with a plug in like Fields Kit. That works great. If you decide to go this route, your output should be set to 29.97. Basically, whatever frame rate your timeline is in is what your output should be.
