720p 23.98 to 1080i 59.94
Hi,
I want to know if it is possible to output a DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 timeline to a 1080i 59.94 HDCAM SR (SRW-5500) using FCP 6 and a Kona 3. On output to monitor, it seem to go find but on edit to tape I get a “Unable to lock servo on deck. Please adjust device pre-roll setting and retry”.I asked FCP to apply the pulldown by using the AJA KONA 3 – 720p 59,94 DVCPro HD easy setup. Is that right? I would have used the 720p 30 If I had one.
So could that be done with only the realtime pulldown and conversions functions of FCP and the Kona 3^
My other question is what is the pulldown pattern in the codec tab of the KONA control panel for? It doesn

And the answer is yes you can! And this is very cool. So here is how:
1- Work in a DVCPRO HD 720p23.98 sequence
2-Put your video playback output to AJA Kona 3 720p 59.94 8bit3-In the EDIT TO TAPE window, put the DEVICE CONTROL to AJA Kona 3 29.97 VTR B
4- In the EDIT TO TAPE window, put the Capture Input to AKA Kona 3 1080i29.97 10 bit5- Your HDCAM deck and Kona must be referenced at 1080i59.94
6- Black the tape enough to do an assemble
6- Set an in point and drag your 720p 23.98 timeline to the EDIT TO TAPE window ASSEMBLE sliding menu and VOILÀ!Mathieu Marano

I’m actually dealing with this exact scenario next week. Quick question though – wouldn’t you set the video playback in FCP to 1080i29.97 10bit, from a DVCPROHD 720p23.98 sequence, what you wanted recorded on the deck, instead of what you have posted, 720p59.94 8bit? Or does this even matter, since the SR deck is set to 1080i29.97 already?

You have to set it to 720p59.94 if you want the Kona to do the uprez. If you set it to 1080 29.97, you will only get a still of your first frame as FCP won’t be able to do the upconvert. By setting the video playback to 720p in the VIEW menu and the output to 1080 2997 in the Edit to tape windows, the Kona will enter the upconvert mode.

You take two output from a three level sync generator set to 1080i59.94 and plug one in the deck hd ref input and the other in thé kona ref input. I use an avenue rack with a tls card that has four independent generators.
