720p23.98 to 1080i29.97
Hi everyone,
I have a Kona LHe and am running FCS2 and need to supply a show for delivery in 1080i29.97. The DOP is shooting 720p23.98 and I was wondering what the best workflow would be? I was told I could do one of three things to convert to 1080i29.97:
1> Have my Kona LHe do a conversion on capture.
2> Capture native and convert it in FCP.
3> Capture native and have the Kona LHe do a conversion on layout to tape.This is my first time having to convert in this manner and I was wondering what the best route would be?

Unfortunately, the LHe does not do cross conversions. The Kona 3/ioHD do.
Your options:

2> Capturing 720p23.98 is fine. You can then put this is an 1080p23.98 timeline and have the Lhe add pulldown to 29.97 on layoff.
3> Can’t do it without a Kona 3/ioHD.4> You can send a 720p23.98 master to a dub/post house that has the capability to make a 1080i29.97 master for you in house.

Bill what format are you working with?
Some decks can do on the fly cross conversion
from 720P to 1080i on playout to capture (the JVC BR-HD50U for example) -
We are using DVCPro HD. What is the quality of the output from the decks that do the cross conversion?

If you are using a 1400 or 1200 DVCPro HD deck, the conversion is very nice.
You bandwidth is going to go up tremendously, though. You might want to think about offlining @ 720p23.98, then online @ 1080i at picture lock.

How would it compare to the other method you described:
Capture native 720p23.98 and place in a 1080p23.98 timeline and let the Kona LH do the pulldown.
Space will be an issue for me as I am off/onlineing a 26 part 22:10min series.

A bit more favorable as the scaling will be done in hardware and not by FCP.
If you want to be really cool, you can use the deck to cross convert to 1080psf23.98. that way all the graphics and everything else you produce will be at the same frame rate as your footage from offline to online. Make sense?

Cool. If you need help with deck settings let me know, as you have to put it in different modes when going to 1080psf23.98.
