Audio Break Up from AES
I going to probably have to chalk this up to a Flying Cow that’s going bad.
I feed the Cow AES, and then XLR into my mixing board. On certain types of audio – like interviews with unmixed audio – I’m getting ‘crackling’ sounds on my speakers. Almost like the AES is breaking up/losing word sync/digital overload…. But I can listen to music, or a mixed track, and all sounds well. The meters in FCP AREN’T peaking – but they’re averaged VU meters.
It hasn’t been a problem before. But I’m newer to Kona 3 and was using SPDIF from my old cards.

As a test try hooking up the Konas RCA outs to see if you still get the crackling.

No break out box = no analog audio outputs.
But this is interesting: I’m feeding SDI to a digibeta, and I can hear the crackling there also.
No problems if I listen to audio over Mac headphone output.

Yeah, this has been an issue with FCP and capture cards for a while. What version of everything are you on? FCP, QT, Kona Drivers, Mac, etc.
I have noticed that with my newest setup (MacPro 8 core, QT 7.3.0, Kona V4 OR 5, FCP 6.0.2) that this problem has been severely decreased.
When it happens, you start and stop and then it goes away, right?

QT 7.3Yeah, it’s intermittent. Very frustrating with people watching dailies and freaking out their audio guy ruined something. I’ve just taken to listening to everything via the headphone jack

“I mean in digital audio, pops and crackles can be attributed to improper sync generation or word clock– equivalent to a a black burst ref generator for video.

That’s what I thought you meant.
i have found that it doesn’t matter if there’s sync or not, freerun or not, sync to video or not, it usually is a weird intermittent problem. Although, like I said, it seems to have subsided with the FCP6 drivers for me anyway.

I second Jeremy. It’s specific to FCP 6. I can run the files in 5 and they sound fine.
It DOES sound like noise we used to get back in the day with DAT’s and word sync and all that. But this machine is standalone, no input video or black burst, straight out of Kona.
