AJA News: Io HD Shipping Today!

    Hello,

AJA is starting production shipments of Io HD today! Please read on for more information, as well as exciting new information on deeper codec compatibility with Io HD!

    _____________________________________________________________________

Io HD is simply the most sophisticated product we have ever built, and it obviously took longer than we first expected. The final result is nothing short of spectacular, from the pristine hardware implementation of the Apple ProRes 422 codec, to the huge host of solid software and hardware features. Io HD is by far the most feature-rich and stable version 1.0 product we have ever released, and we hope you will agree it was worth the wait.

As a quick refresher, here are some facts about the Io HD:

    – 10-bit 4:2:2 full-raster HD over Firewire 800
    – Apple ProRes 422 and Apple ProRes 422 HQ Codec hardware integration

    AJA Sales writes –
    Io HD supports:

    – Apple ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 HQ, SD and HD, 720 and 1080 formats, ingest and playout (natively)
    – DVCProHD, 720 and 1080 formats, ingest and playout (CPU-based)
    – Uncompressed HD, 720 and 1080 formats, 8-bit/10bit, playout (CPU-based)

    REPLY –
I am up to page 41 in the pdf manual for the I/O HD, and I don’t see this stated anywhere. Since when did DVCProHD become supported, and technically HOW is it possible to do uncompressed HD via a FW800 port ?

    Hi Bob,

As we state (perhaps not so clearly?) is that DVCProHD support is done by the CPU, a software encode in realtime, like what is done on KONA. In our testing, properly configured MacPro’s and MacBook Pro’s are capable of realtime DVCProHD ingest and playout with an Io HD.

So, Io HD supports not only Apple ProRes 422 in its hardware, but that data can also be used with DVCProHD and many other workflows.

    Make sense?

…also, uncompressed HD playback is compressed on the way out in realtime to ProRes 422, and then goes up the Firewire. It is an option for those with uncompressed 8/10 bit HD timelines and material that wish to output via Io HD. Again, as we state, CPU-based, not hardware-based (Io HD side) as is ProRes 422.

    Hi,

It would be great if you can let us know what is the configuration of the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro that will be capable of supporting DVCProHD (injest and playout) and uncompressed HD playout.

    Thanks,

    Hi Chrispy,

That information is in the Release Notes which are contained in the software installer. From the Release Notes:

    Io HD System Requirements

    Note
The installer will run a system requirements check before installing. If your system does not meet the minimum requirements listed below, the AJA Io HD software will not be installed.

    Hi,

Will the lowest model of the MacBook Pro be ok for IoHD, especially if we need to playout a 8bit/10bit HD uncompressed timeline out of the IoHD.

    Thanks,

    Hi Chrispy,

Most likely any recent MacBook Pro that has Firewire 800 should work, but I will talk to QA on Monday and post the minimum CPU spec.

    Thanks,

Nope –no uncompressed HD playback from a laptop ( how could you with out proper drives?)

Uncompressed HD Playback using an IoHD is from Intel desktop machines w/ suitable drive arrays ONLY.

    Hi,

Yes, Gary is right (as usual)!

As stated in the first post:

“Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 and Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 QuickTime playback is supported when using MacPro desktop computers along with the Io HD. (An adequate disk array for uncompressed HD playback is of course required.)”

    Thanks!
