kona 3 cross-convert quality
Can someone comment on the quality of the Kona 3’s cross-conversion from 720p to 1080p? I’m using a HDLink to monitor out to a Dell 2405. While I like the pixel-per-pixel view, I’d rather cross-convert to fill the screen because the 2405’s backlighting is too strong in the black area around the pixel-per-pixel frame (even w/ custom LUTs). How does the cross-conversion work w/ regards to frame rates? e.g. – does 720p 60 fps get converted to 1080p 30 fps, or 1080p 60 fps?

I cross convert 720p23.98 to 1080p23.98 constantly. And it looks great. This is outputting a DVCPRO HD timeline to an HDCAM tape. Superb job.
720p60 runs at 59.94…60fps. That converts well to 1080i29.97…at 30fps….because 60 is divisible by 30 rather evenly. It’s when you go 23.98 to 29.97 where things get tricky…but they still turn out fine.

I just tried to put an AJA DVCPRO HD 720p59.94 – to 1080i 29.97 and it would Que the tape, but would freeze and not start – gave me a servo lock error.
have any idea why this happens?

Well,
we were trying to get it out to an HDCAM deck. While I had not problem getting the kona to go from 720 to 1080 – ultimately, the FCP timeline needs to be 29.97 to go out to a sony deck. unfortunately to change the timeline’s timebase, it would want to render the sequence.
so, we’ve figured out you need to run cinema tools on the raw clips before editing.
