April 26, 2007 at 4:53 pmFor Walter’s attention, my raid 5 solution we posted 3weeks back from Rentaraid, is working great. Getting nearly 500MB/s thro’put from the 8 drive setup and importantly, very quiet…in fact can’t hear it at all.
Walter, you said you didn’t want to look too deeply into this until
after NAB. Were you able to find anything there that was comparable for the monies and speed? I read most of the blogs and storage
was not really mentioned.
Also took out a drive and carried on working with the rebuild in the bkgd, very impressive.
You wanted updates, so this is one.

April 26, 2007 at 6:31 pmI have to tell you, your solution from Rentaraid looks remarkably like the RAID I built myself. It appears to be the same case, and while I don’t know which controller card they gave you, I’m betting it’s the same Rocket RAID that I’ve been using. It cost me around $2500 or so with 8 500 GB drives last fall. The prices on those drives has dropped, now, so it’s even cheaper now.
IMO, if they’re going to use the same off the shelf components as me, why should I pay them?

April 26, 2007 at 7:40 pmI think you missed part of my point. I paid a lot less than you when you adjust for the exchange rate, because I sourced & assempled all of the pieces myself. And it’s probably exaclty the same case & card that you’re using.
BTW, I love the case. it’s whisper quiet. The card can be a bit wonky at times, but I don’t have any speed issues, even with 10 bit 720 footage (haven’t tried it with 1080, though). As long as I properly unmount & power down the RAID, it’s 100%. If I forget to do that, then it sometimes comes on with a drive missing, and as soon as I get it to see the drive, it starts to rebuild.

April 27, 2007 at 10:13 amArnie, I don’t have any issues with the unit and I have great support.Generally in the UK we pay the equivalent of a pound for your dollar so its still a great deal, not to mention taxes. I’m still interested to see if Walter found anything to beat this unit at NAB but he hasn’t responded yet.
