Kona LHe vs BM Multibridge Pro
Posted by Brian Tario on September 12, 2006 at 1:28 amHey guys…not looking for a flame session…I’m in the process of finalizing an order for a new Mac Pro and I’d like to hear what users think the benefits of the LHe (with BOB) are over the Blackmagic Multibridge Pro. To me they seem very similar and are fairly evenly priced. I’ve heard the Multibridges have had reliability issues, but I’m a happy Blackmagic Decklink SP user for the past 3+ years. Not sure if I should try AJA or stick with BM. Any thoughts are welcome. The new Mac Pro will be the dual 3 GHz, 6 GB RAM, ATI X1900 video card, connected to a 3.5 TB Xraid. Thanks a lot, Brian

September 12, 2006 at 4:48 amOK, this is highly biased!
AJA hardware downconvert, hardware compressed HD codec acceleration, real support team, advanced exchange, better features fully supported (use in motion, soundtrack pro, etc…). i just learned that the new Avid Nitris as well as the entire Discreet product line (Flint, Flame, Inferno) are all running on AJA OEM boards. seems to indicate AJA is a serious product. you have a really nice set up, no reason to go cheap on the device that responsible for the quality of your ingest, layoff and experience.
i can play 16 layers of DVCPRO HD or HDV with my Quad and a Kona–that for me is a big feature. All with a pristine downconvert.

Don’t forget upconvert!!! Bm used to not have 720p24 downconvert either, don’t know about now. These two features (hardware up/down convert) are worth the investment in AJA alone among all the other good reasons.

The LHe does not do upconversion, only downconversion. If you want upconvert, you have to go with the Kona3. Needless to say, go with AJA, rock solid products and amazing tech support. If you have any problem, they take care of you quick, fast and professionally. Just my 2 cents.

September 12, 2006 at 3:21 pmWoops, thanks for calling that out, Jeremy. Mr. Newmark is correct. LH does not do upconvert.

September 12, 2006 at 6:15 pmCan you elaborate on this:
advanced exchange, better features fully supported (use in motion, soundtrack pro, etc…).
Thanks for the input. I saw the stories on Avid and Autodesk too. It is hard to argue with the big names…I’m working in FCP by the way.

September 12, 2006 at 10:24 pmWell, since you mentioned AVID and Autodesk, both manufacturers just had press releases on Creative Cow, stating that both AVID (for the Nitris) and Autodesk for the Discreet line, will use AJA cards. But since you asked what card you should use – how about the Digital Voodoo 64AV. If you buy this card, not only will you be helping some poor soul out, but you will help eliminate competition in our industry (by going out of business).

September 12, 2006 at 10:46 pmI thought this is a forum for help, not wishes that I go out of business. Thanks a lot Bob. If there was a point to your post, I missed it.

September 12, 2006 at 11:57 pmSorry Aujom, but this kind of language is called SARCASM. The Kona LHe is excellent, and the Blackmagic Multibridge Pro is excellent. There is no “better” product. Anyone who decides to “rant on” about the HP xw8200 Win XP computer is “better” than a MAC G5 Quad, should be shot, because this is a rediculous comparison, as the HP xw8200 is excellent, as is the MAC G5 Quad. One computer is not better than the next. And by the way, when I just said “someone should be shot” – this is also called SARCASM – it does not mean that someone should pick up a weapon, and shoot someone. If your english is not very good, I deeply apologize to you. However, if you speak fluent english, and don’t like these types of expressions of speech, well, too bad. I’m from NY.
With that said, you will be happy with either product. Around here, we seem to like AJA.

September 13, 2006 at 12:39 amBob,
quite a positioning statement!
anyhow, if you run HDV footage, and have both products down convert–there is no comparison. you dont need a scope. if you want multiple layers of video without sapping computer resources, there is no comparison. some of these animals are more equal than others.

September 13, 2006 at 12:45 amBob, I’ve decided. You crack me up. Some of your other posts have made me laugh out loud, which is more than I can say for most comedians. So keep it up (the good work I mean) and thanks for the advice. I may need more in the future. Take care, Brian
