I have been editing concerts on my Quad G5 w/ Kona 3 board for the past 6 months have been very pleased with the results. We delivered 3 shows this month to DirecTV all of which passed QC with no problems. The shows are shot either entirely in HDCAM but occasionaly they will shoot 5-6 cameras in HDCAM and 2 in HDV. I have been offlining the shows using the DV codec and onlining uncompressed.

I was wondering if I should consider onlining the shows using the DVCPRO HD codec instead of uncompressed. The storage savings would be helpful but I do not want to compromise quality. Another reason I am considering DVCPRO HD is because I am demoing Final Touch to color correct these shows and I think (emphasize think, I am not sure) that Final Touch would deliver better realtime playback results with DVCPRO HD than uncompressed 8 bit footage. I have heard many wonderful things about the DVCPRO HD codec. A friend of mine who does visual FX told me that it is his favorite codec to work in. Anyway, if my source is HDCAM and/or HDV, is DVCPRO HD a good codec to use or should I stick with uncompressed?

If you are looking for maximum color correction capability uncompressed is the way to go versus an 8 bit compressed codec such as dvcpro HD.

I recommend conducting a side by side and see if the compression hit is good enough for you to change over.

We deliver DVCPro HD to the networks are receiving kudos on the outstanding quality of our product. We just added Final Touch HD to the mix this year and the results have been outstanding.

We’re starting a new series in October which is being shot in HDV that we will post in DVCPro HD.

We only go to HDCAM for final masters, although we’re now petitioning one of the networks to accept DVCPro HD as a Master since Discovery has added that as a Master format.
