  • DVCPRO-HD 59.94 – orange bar?

Posted by Michael Rothenberg on July 12, 2006 at 9:31 pm

I have a Kona LH and G5 setup and am in the process of batch ‘uprezzing’ a series of 45 minute programs that were shot on the Varicam at 59.94 and originally captured for offline as DV25 anamorphic through the Kona (using Panasonic 1200A deck).

The recapturing is going fine, basically, but after each program is done and I check the new DVCPRO-HD sequence the material all has an orange bar over it. Yes, I’ve used the Kona Easy Setup to make sure that everything is correctly set. With all my sequence RT settings on “Dynamic” I’m getting stuttery video playback with big 10 and 20 frame jumps. There is basically one stream of video with cuts between the shots.

I’m using an eight drive SATA RAID that plays back 10-bit uncompressed SD without any problem.

Can anyone help me get to the bottom of this?

    Thanks much.

Go through all of your clips and Remove Attributes > Distort.

When you uprez an SD show that’s already been cut, very often FCP will apply Distortion to the clips to try to keep them in the 4:3 aspect of the original cut.

Good idea; I should have mentioned I had already checked that. There are no Motion or Distort attributes applied.

    questions

did you create a new sequence AFTER you changed the easy set up?
    Are you sure?

your DV offline would have been at 29.97 and that would cause the render if you have not changed the time base to 59.94

Thanks, Gary – I think you’re onto it. The sequence was automatically created when I Media Managed from the DV sequence… I did tell MM to make seqs in the new project DVCPRO HD 59.94 – but I got an error message after the MM procedure (before the batch capture) that pointed out the discrepancy in timebase and said the new timebase would be ignored.

The timebase of the sequence in the new project is 29.97, but it’s grayed out.

Can I save myself simply by pasting the sequence clips into a new sequence with the 59.94 timebase?

    Thanks for the help.

Copying into a new sequence solved the problem.

    Thanks so much Gary!!

    Yup

just create a new seq and option Drag the old sequence into the new one — that should allow you to copy the individual clips into the new 59.94 Seq.
