525i non-drop mastering from Kona
Posted by James Horak on June 7, 2006 at 8:33 pmCan it be done? Haven’t had to do it in years, and my Kona 2 setup doesn’t like it one bit. Not an option to go 30fps in the control panel, so I’m thinking it isn’t going to happen. Any help is appreciated.

June 7, 2006 at 9:37 pmyou mean you can’t get a 525i non drop master to work from your Kona 2? What’s happening? Is your deck set up for non drop? Are your sequences set up for non drop?
Give a little more info…

June 7, 2006 at 10:21 pmI cut the sequence at Kona 10-bit 525i 29.97. Client asked for a non-drop master. So I set a sequence up as Kona 10-bit 525i and change it to 30fps before editing anything into it. Cut and paste my material from the 29.97 sequence into the 30 sequence (the individual clips) and I can’t get the card to output any video. It will play it on my computer monitor, but my component and SDI output put up a freeze frame. If I go back to the 29.97 sequence, everything plays fine.
2.7 Dual G5
FCP 5.04
Kona 2 2.0 drivers
4GB RAMAs a side note, we worked around it by setting the deck up NDF, TC to Regen, and assemble editing from the DF sequence. Seems to have worked fine.

June 7, 2006 at 10:26 pmGot ya. non-drop frame does not mean the tape runs at 30fps exactly, it still runs at 29.97. Keep your 29.97 sequence, duplicate it. Hit apple-0 and uncheck the drop frame box. Make sure your deck is setup for NDF and away you go.
