Hey all. I’ve been having this problem off and on for awhile now intermittently, and haven’t been able to resolve it. I have the Kona 2 card on a dual G5, 2 GB RAM, and a 5 TB RAID. When capturing either uncompressed SD or HD, sometimes the video will lock up while the audio keeps going. Meaning, I’m watching the capture as its working, and at some random point, the video will stop, audio continues, and then the video will refresh later in the capture. I’ve called AJA about it, and they don’t seem to think that it is a card issue, that it could be the RAID. THe RAID is an Apple XServe RAID, all new drives in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as we have some documentaries coming in house and I don’t want these issues when clients are here. I have all of the recent hardware and software updates for the Kona and the RAID.

I would talk to Tech Support on this one as you’ll probably get through this a bit quicker.

But one thing I would love to know is your full system setup since it’s not in your profile. Very difficult to diagnose anything without knowing everything you’re running and what versions.

You might want to try the Kona System Test to check the speed of your drives. You might have a program installed that is slowing down your drives OR you have a progrma running in the background that is slowing down your system.

please tell me how you are referencing your equipment. Do you have a common black generator on your AJA Kona Reference In and your VTR Ref Video In ? Exactly what make and model black generator is it ?

Make sure Write Cache Flush is turned off on the XServe RAID.

I did a systems test, abd the write speed was 200.6 MB/s, and the read speed was 233.2 MB/s. THe test was done on 1920×1080 10 bit, with a file size of 4GB. I maxed out the test because the majority of our work here will be uncompressed HD documentaries. Looking at the graph of the test, the read speed was above the yellow line, but the write speed was below the magenta line. Does that indicate that my write speed is not up to snuff with this particular setting?

I do not have any reference in for the Kona card. Could that be what is causing my problem?

I just hooked up a reference video in to the card, and it is a Sony TG700. I am going out the black 1 (it has 4) into the Kona card. Will this fix all of my woes that have come to pass? I changed the reference in to the desired 1080psf 23.98.

I am responding to this on 6/11, so you may have already resolved this issue, but you can’t hook up a 29.97 black reference signal to a VTR that you want to operate at 23.98. You need a TRI LEVEL SYNC GENERATOR, so that both the Kona and the VTR operate at 23.98. These units start at about $3000 – from Evertz, Astro, Ensemble, Leader, Tektronix, Sigma, and others.
