Why can’t I change the capture preset to 4 channels?
I can’t seem to change the capture preset for uncompressed 8bit, even when I make a copy of the preset. The only option is 24bit 8 channel using the Kona 2. When I highlight the Audio Format tab, there are no other menu options besides that one 24bit 8 channel.
When you batch digitize, you are only allowed to use a capture preset, you cannot use the log and capture settings.
Am I crazy? I’m trying to recapture 4 hrs of digibeta media from an old project and cannot change the clip settings before I recapture.

I think the problem I was having was that you cannot change a preset to 4 channels. When you go to batch digitize, the capture settings declare that you’re about to capture 8 channels at 24 bit.
I changed it under the capture settings in the log and capture dialogue, which worked, but batch preset selection screen still said 8 channels. The final turned out to be four, but it’s a little weird that you can’t change the capture settings, or create a new one, that defaults to 4 channels.
I did read that post, fyi, but for a logged clip that hasn’t been captured, you can’t change the clip settings.

On the contrary, you can. Simply choose your offline clip in the browser, right click the clip and choose clip settings and choose what you want from the resulting dialogue box. This is FCP 5’s way of doing it. In FCP 4.5 you could make this change right in the tracks column, now you must go through this extra step.
Your will not capture 8 channels unless you have told FCP to capture 8 channels. The 8 channels are all that’s available, it is up to you to set the number you want to capture in the log & capture window.

Oddly enough, every time I tried to change the clip settings using your described method, it wouldn’t work. These were clips from an older project that were offline and had only 4 channels of audio. I ended up just relogging the 8 tapes and reconnecting the media to the redigitized tapes, so the problem was solved.
I think the thing that was weird to me was that the capture settings selection screen (the screen that comes up after you click ‘batch’) didn’t reflect the changes that I tried to make under the log and capture capture settings tab. I also couldn’t create an easy setup using 4 channels. Try it – there is only one 24bit 8 channel option. There is a pulldown tab to make other selections, but for my Kona 2, there is only one option. I figured a workaround, but it’s a little disconcerting when you only want four channels and it looks like it’s digitizing 8.

Interesting. I can’t recreate it here, but then again, I don’t have your old project.
How old was this older project? Was it pre quicktime 7?
As for creating an easy setup, I don’t think that’s possible with 4 channels. If you start a new project, just make sure that you have the exact audio channels you want highlighted (turned on) in the clip settings tab of the log & cap window.
