No FPC Playback on NTSC Monitor
All I see is the Mac Desktop while editing or playing from the timeline. Only when I go to Print to Tape does the image on my NTSC monitor change from the Desktop graphic to the video images from my FCP timeline.
I do have FCP easy set up to AJA Kona NTSC 8 Bit Uncompressed, and the Kona Control Pannel Analog Out set to Component (have tried both the BETA and SMPTE EBU settings).
Incidentally I am not using the SDI digital outs at all at this point but the Kona Control panel shows SDI out 1 and 2 connected at 525i29.97.
Again on the Easy set up summary it shows Platyback Output Video: AJA Kona 525i29.97 8 bit (720×486) and Edit to Tape/PTV: Same As Playback.
The monitor is the Sony 1351Q with Component Video inputs on the back. I have the component video outs from the Kona card going into the monotor, then out of the monitor and into a Sony Beta SP UVW 1800.

Hit option-f12 to refresh av devices. If that doesn’t work go to the view > video playback > AJA 525i29.97 8 bit and make sure that’s checked, then go to the same menu except the audio playback and make sure audio follows video is checked. If this doesn’t work I would trash your FCP prefs. If that doesn’t work uninstall and reinstall the drivers. this trashes your FCP prefs again, and also blow away any homemade easy setups you might have created so back those up if you want to keep them. It seems your card is working if you get a signal to your deck even though it’s in edit to tape.

Thanks for the reply. Actually after finding the view menu I realized that >External Video< was set to OFF rather than All Frames. I clicked on All frames and this seems to have fixed the problem. Do you know of a preference setting for this or do I have to check it for every new project? Michael

You shouldn’t have to check every project unless your easy setup is messed up somewhere. This also happens when you are bouncing in between tow apps that use the kona card such as After Effects and FCP or FCP and motion. If you don’t tap the desktop in between there’s a chance that the previous app will not release the card to FCP. Make sense?

Regarding switching between apps. I normally hide Motion, Title Motion, DVD Studio and then open FCP back up using the dock. This is not the suggested method? I should actually click on the desktop after hiding or instead of hiding the app?
Also I do switch back and forth between easy setups for DV via firewire import to Beta-SP via the kona card. Will this effect the Play All Frames option?

What I usually do to switch between apps is apple-tab to the desktop, then apple tab to FCP. If I want to switch to AE, then I apple tab to the desktop and then apple tab to AE. If you need to hide all the other apps, then get to the app you want (after the desktop) then use the hide other function, which usually is option-apple-h but could be something different or not a key stroke at all in some apps. If there’s no keystroke then you’ll have to hide others from the menu.
