  • Log and Capture delay Kona LH with component input

Posted by Dave Beaty on January 25, 2006 at 1:27 pm

We are looking for some help with settings using FCPro 5 and Kona LH.

We have the Kbox input connected to two component sources, a BetacamSP deck and a JVC BRHD50 with a switcher.

When we capture from the BetaSP, no problems, if I switch to the JVC, which is outputing NTSC, we are seeing a delay as much as 20-30 seconds before capture now commences. This is with no machine control and Kona set to 525 29.97 8bit input.

Any thoughts on trouble shooting? We tried changing the Genlock settings ect. No change.

    Thanks

    Dave

Both machines are being routed through a component switcher?

Is the system timed via a black burst generator?

What happens if you log and capture with the JVC instead of using Capture Now?

I have a simple A/B switch box routing component analog from the same decks as you have and do not experience this delay. I have a Multibridge extreme instead of the AJA but don’t think this is the reason- your switcher setup is more likely.

In capture now, FCP might be taking the time to calculate the amount of storage available. Check to see if you can limit capture now to a specific time and then see if that changes how long it winds up for.

    Thanks for the help

We are using a Ocean Matrix component AB switcher. The only problem with this config is that the JVC BRHD50 cannot be refed to black burst as far as I can tell. Nothing in the manual nor any ref input on it. I bet this whole problem is realted to that.

One thing we’ve noticed, it seems to only do this when the deck is downconverting HDV. IOW, when 720p is being downconverted and output as NTSC. We can capture 720p 59.94 to the Aja 720 codec without this issue. But it sometimes takes a restart to get the whole thing to switch to HD capture.

I downloaded the standalone Aja capture utility and it works fine with all of the above standards, no delay, spinning wheel. So we can use that to capture.

Setting in and outs for a JVC downconverted NTSC capture clip and using RS422 control results in a spinning wheel of death, yet the Beta deck in the same config works fine. BTW, This is on TWO identical FCPro systems and TWO BRHD50 decks.

    Any more suggestions?

Wow! I am using a very similar setup with no problem- Ocean matrix Switch, JVC down convert etc., the only difference being I’m using Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme instead of AJA. Perhaps the ME is less bothered by the JVC’s lack of black burst input? Have you spoken to AJA tech support yet- they are really great.
