I am using the Kona2 card in FCP5.0.3 and trying to capture 720p 59.94 material. I used the Easy Set-ups and I think that I got the frame offset correct (I had to change it to -3 frames offset). The problem that I am having is that when I bring the movie into Final Cut (it won’t do it automatically – just gives me a subclip with black), the timecode is so far off it isn’t even funny. For example, I started my capture at 1:15:16:19. The timecode the captured clip is reporting is 1:15:12:02. It is also capturing a duplicate frame at the beginning (this is not varicam material). For instance, I get 2 identical frames of 1:15:12:02.
I thought that perhaps, I could then put it into a timeline and just export it with the right timecode, but I am a bit concerned that it won’t be right.
Can anybody help me with this?

Are you coming in via HDSDI or Firewire? What frame rate did you shoot at? What vtr are you using? What are the capture settings set to?

FCP has a problem with HDSDI 720P captures.

Research this forum and the FCP forum for prior discussions regarding this capture problem.

Walter can tell you about his experiences with HDSDI captures.

Oh I have lots of fun experiences with 720p 8 or 10bit captures via HD-SDI, all of them bad.

But wrong timecode is not one of them. Essentially I capture the footage, then trash all the bogus subclips FCP creates and then import all the files from the hard drive. All the clips come in correctly with the right timecode.

Let’s just hope you never have to re-capture the footage in 720p later. You’ll need to manually re-edit the entire project. Woo hoooo! 720p capture via HD-SDI is broken and no one at Apple seems to care because we’re up to version 5.0.3 and it’s still not fixed.

That is only with 8bit and 10bit Uncompressed content over HDSDI, and it is an apple issue.

Yep, good clarification on that. If you capture to the DVCPro HD codec via HD-SDI, you’re good to go.

Also, if you do “Capture Now” via HD-SDI, that works just fine. It’s only Capture Clip and Batch Capture that are affected.

Thanks for all the info. I may have to try the Capture Now. I am capturing with SDI. And I did do a test after talking with tech support at Kona where I captured to an internal drive instead of my Medea raid using the DVCPro HD compressor. I got the exact same wrong timecode. These clips are going to be for video FX and they really need to be uncompressed (the client initally wanted them with the Blackmagic codec).

    >>>If you capture to the DVCPro HD codec via HD-SDI, you’re good to go…

So is DVCPro HD not good enough for ANY graphics work? (Kind of like DVCam in SD???) Or just not for highend graphics – gradients, 3D animation, nice mograf work?

My typical workflow in SD with DV originated material is to capture in DV, but render graphics and titles uncompressed. Is this pretty much the same with DVCPro HD? Since the footage originated in DVCPro HD, is the main advantage to capturing uncompressed to play it realtime in an uncompressed project? I’ve just captured my first bit of Varicam so I’ve been reading up on workflow here and elsewhere. Thanks for tips.

DVCPro HD is not even close to comparing it to DVCAM for SD work. The codec is outstanding for graphics, extremely crisp and clean. I do all my work for HD graphics in the DVCPro HD codec right now unless the timeline is an uncompressed timeline.

No, generally I work with DVCPro HD natively by capturing via Firewire, editing in a DVCPro HD timeline and then going back out Firewire to the 1200A. But in the case of our film, we had a lot of low situations which the Varicam “F” model did not like and I brought the footage in uncompressed to give myself a little more lattitude on the color correction and to address some artifacting on the DVCPro HD captures. The new “H” model camera seems to have a much better handling of low light situations.
