Too many opions from to many people with just enough information to be dangerous…..I am tried of sales people…

Looking to get advice from the Kona users on what is the best graphics card “for the money” for my new Kona HD. At present my duel 23″ Cinema Displays have lots of “interference” or noise. The displays are 8′ away from the G5 and I have “Smartview Intelligent HDTV repeaters” inline that was to solve the problem. No go on that. Looks like I need to upgrade the graphics card.

If that is so, which way should I go? I could also use help on exactly what card goes in which slot with that upgrade.

By the way I have a fibre card in for my xserve raid as well.

what card are you using now? maybe 10.4 whacked a driver? slow refresh or just noise?

in any event, if you are looking to upgrade, my ati x850 xt mac works awesome, so does the x800. you will need a $32 adapter, though to take the one adc to dvi, there is another native dvi on board.

bare feats has done test on both of them–they simply rock for performance and only take one bus. the strength of the nvidia is that it can run tw 30″‘s at once–but these will run a 30 and 23 at once which is more pixels than two 23’s obviously.

for installation, as your G5 tower stands up, the storage card goes in the pci-x 133mhz slot on the very top, the video card goes in the agpx4 slot at the very bottom and the kona card goes in either of the 100 mhz slots in the middle–either 2 or 3.

    good luck resolving this issue!

I am not familiar with the Smartview extenders. First, plug the Cinema displays DIRECTLY into the G5, bypassing the extenders. Is it still noisy? If the problem is from the extenders, I can recommend the Gefen series of DVI extenders. The CAT 5 5000HD is a dual DVI extender with USB for the keyboard – about $1299.

If the problem stil exists with the monitors right by the computer – I really haven’t seen any of the ATI or NVidia cards be noisy – even the cheapest ATI 9650.

I made some dumm mistakes setting up my RGB monitors about 35 feet away from the CPU in the machine room and encountered a variety of problems including, I think, what you are describing. Here are the solutions as I have resolved them, though I’m sure there are a few other ways too. Some of this might not apply to your situation, but maybe someone else will need it:
