Kona2 driver 1.1.4 1080i30
Can someone tell me what use you would use for 1080i30? I noticed that in the newest driver this setting was added but I can’t figure out a use for it. I work at a post house and we don’t even have black reference for this rate. I had a client mistakenly think that his footage was at 1080i30. He set his sequence to 30fps and rendered out a movie at 30fps. Unfortunately, we were unable to play it out for him and his commercial ended up being a frame short.
According to the Final Cut Pro 5 manual “Before color was added to NTSC video signals, the frame rate was truly 30fps. However, this format is almost never used today.”
And “Many people round 29.97 fps to 30 fps, but this can lead to confusion during postproduction. Today, it is still very rare to use this frame rate of 30 fps, but very common to use 29.97.”Can anyone help me explain to the client why I can’t output his 30fps movie to a D5 especially when he sees a setting for 1080i30?

30 frame content is still used in scientific and forensic analysis, however since when is 1080 content of any kind an NTSC format?
On dealing with your clients – tell the them the truth (they don’t know what they are doing, but you can help them) or tell them nothing and next time they find a post house that will.
But really, if you are looking to the FCP manual for info like on a setting like this you are seriously misguided into thinking that apple understands anything about DF vs NDF frame rates or anything other than 23.98 and 29.97fps — they have had more than a few years to work on 25fps and still don’t have that right.

Thank you for you post. However, I am aware that 1080 content is not really NTSC. What I am trying to find out is why Aja added a 1080i30 preset and video format to their driver setting and what the reasoning behind it is.
I do not lie to my clients and I never will. I did this post so that I could make an informed reply to my clients and not try to BS my way through it as you seem to be implying that I would do. I am also fully aware that client’s don’t always know what they are doing and depend on me. Which is why I am trying to figure it out as well. If I wanted to just lie and misguide the client, I wouldn’t bother wasting time trying to research it. I would just lie or BS my way through it.
Also, I was looking in the Final Cut manual as another resource. That is not my only source of information nor was it my first or will it be my last source of information. Again, hence my post on this website. Thank you for your post, but I would have appreciated a more helpful reply and not one making assumptions about me and the way my company and I do business. I believe in integrity and so does my company.

This is a user website where people share information. It’s not AJA’s website. It’s unfair to rip Gary when all he is doing is trying to help. If you waited for more than one response without attacking Gary, maybe you’d have an answer to your question by now.

I appreciate all that everyone has posted on this website. It did feel to me, however, that I was being attacked unfairly as well. I am sorry if others read it as me jumping the gun or overreacting in anyway.

It was included in the easy setup for law enforcement as I said, and places like NASA uses 30fps also.
30p is also a standard shooting frame rate for content that will be Live / Real Time compressed Video for streaming over the internet.It is there because enough people that use AJA hardware need and use those settings.
But as a setting it is no more useful to the average user in the US than PAL settings are, and I don’t hear any complaints from users about having 25fps settings. But that does not mean one should just grab them and use them if you do not know or are not sure what they are for.

Thank you. That helps me out a lot. There are definitely plenty of settings that Kona provides that I don’t use and know better than to use. The client definitely didn’t know what he was doing but I was stuck with what he gave me and with him going “see, there is a 30 frame 1080i.” We tried to explain to him but he wasn’t getting it and I thought that maybe I really was missing something since it just got added to the presets.

I was not trying to rip you, and I apologize, my response was not my most genial of this day.
but please look at your post again– you are complaining about an HD Frame Rate setting referencing Apple’s NTSC comments. HD is not NTSC — Too bad apple does not get it.There is much much more to the video world that just FCP. But considering the ATSC specs on DTV it’s a miracle that any of us ever get any work up for transmission.
Apple does not have all the answers, and frankly neither do the rest of us. However, between walter, marco, chrispy, myself and others here we have a more than a couple of lifetimes of experience.

the fix
Create a new 1080i60 seq with the proper settings and copy and paste all of the content into the new timeline.
