Any gamma issues in Kona land with FCP5, Tiger, and After Effects?

Are there any issues with gamma differences between FCP 5 and After Effects or differences in gamma between what is displayed on the NTSC monitor and what is on the desktop or what is rendered?

FCP works in YUV and AE works in RGB. So the colorspace if different.
Use the AJA 10bit RGB codec to transcoded your footage between AE and FCP for the best results.From IBC

Does that mean render out of AE to 10 bit, then have FCP transcode the footage into whatever codec you are editing in (such as 8 bit), or are you suggesting that we capture/edit in FCP (and of course do subsequent renders from AE) with the AJA 10 bit codec?

September 14, 2005 at 5:36 pmI think Chris is trying to find relief from the Gamma issues that are currently present in the 5.x drivers for Blackmagic.
In this regard, the two products handle gamma quite differently. Blackmagic was relying on their codec to do the right thing. When they moved away from their codec and started relying on the Apple codec, that’s when things went wacky.
In contrast, the Kona cards have a specific setting for this in their Control Panel. In there, you can specify your gamma (601, 709, custom) and similarly for the color space.
It should be noted that with FCP 4.5 and the Apple codecs, one should lock both color space and gamma to 601 due to the fact that the Apple codecs under FCP 4.5 are not 709 aware. Keep in mind that 709 is specific to HD, just as 601 is normally specific to SD.

Yep. But don’t AJA cards use the Apple codec? The problems I’m having are not in converting between 601 and 709 color space, but between 601 RGB and 601 YUV. All my problems have been in SD so far. Basically, I can’t get a consistent, linear gamma when moving between FCP and AE. There was also a problem with gamma from AE being output to the preview monitor one way and rendering another. A real problem for color correction.
So, am I hearing that none of these problems exist with the Kona2?

September 14, 2005 at 7:57 pmTo my knowledge Apple 8bit handles the ae/fcp transfer but apple10 (FCP5) does not. I’m testing mostly with 720p but that is what i found and was told by an aja tech person. I’m still trying to get to the bottom of it myself. Everything I’m doing now is in Apple 8 for that reason. Hope to move to Apple 10 when this is sorted out.

I am not transcoding anything, If I know I will have a large amount of AE footage I capture everything to the 10bit RGB codec thats what it is for ( works for other animations also).
IT has already been mentioned that FCP4.5 did not use the proper colorspace conversions into the smpte 709 HD colorspace and it seems that while QT native files can handle the conversion correctly into or out of the RGB 10bit -YUV 10bit needed by Final Cut. FCP does not see that data correctly and often fails to convert the content’s colors correctly.
