I’m changing my AJA iO with an AJA KONA LS. I was wondering what real utility can the optional KL Box have if I can use my old video patch bay and my old audio patch bay. I guess that’s why they sell it as an OPTIONAL item.
    Do I really need it?
    Thanks

the Kl box will give you a set of RCA analog outputs for audio monitoring if you are so inclined to use them. Some people prefer to have a box to plug all of their stuff in, but if you have a patch bay that will handle SDI & AES this will act as your kl box. Some people do not like the snake that goes form your computer to the patch bay, the kl box tidies this up with two DVI style cables that run to the kl box. I think it really depends on what you need in your suite and how much patching and cabling is needed.

I don’t know why you are getting rid of your wonderful AJA I/O box. You will now lose the capability of having BOTH component AND composite at the same time, and will wind up doing more patching. The AJA I/O box is a tank, and is a great product for the future when you have to upconvert to HD. The KL Box elimates the mess and rats nest of cabling behind your computer, with all the horrible skinny little wires that come out of the AJA Kona LS card. To me, the KL box is an essential item in the purchase of an LS. But if it was my money (and I LOVE to people to spend money) – I would buy nothing, because you already have a killer product. IF you don’t mind a rats nest of tangled wires behind your computer, then you don’t need the KL box.
