  • Loss of SD-SDI signal on Kona2 Card

Posted by Ian Tucker on August 26, 2005 at 3:53 am

At least once a day my Kona2/K-Box system loses the SDI output signal. It seems to be fairly random, however I have noticed it happening the most when I am going in and out of “Edit to Tape”. The SDI output goes to black and if I try to record to tape I get what looks like static recorded on tape – which really makes no sense. So far the only solution that gets the signal back is to disconnect the SDI output cable, reconnect it and then turn off and back on the external video from FCP. This is, however, just a temporary fix. I’ve checked the SDI cables and they work fine. I have also made sure that I have all of the updated AJA software.

I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this problem of random signal loss and if you have, have you found a better, more permanent solution? Right now I am only working in SD. I’m not sure if I’d have the same problem in HD.

    I am on a 2Ghz G5 with 2GB of RAM / FCP 5.0.2 / Tiger 10.4.2 / Kona2 with the K-Box. SDI output to D-Beta – always at 10bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check your Kona Control Panel and ensure that you have the input selected as the default with the SD-SDI device connected.

Had precisely the same problem, only with input via SDI from DBeta. Hadn’t touched the control panel in weeks, so even though it checked out ok, I figured it couldn’t be the problem.

What worked was trashing preferences, running Panther Cache Cleaner at Medium cleaning on all levels [Tiger Cache Cleaner if you are on 10.4.x], restart [automatic], then repairing permissions. I will also occassionally trash my FCP Rescue backups by trashing the backup files AND the pref files on the computer, startup FCP and configure it the way it is normally used, then quit FCP. This will create a new fresh set of prefs which I then backup into FCP Rescue for future use.

Seems like a lot of stuff to do unnecessarily, but in the long run it’s worth it.

Thanks for all the tips. I tried everything both of you suggested but unfortunately nothing has solved the problem other than the cumbersome work around of disconnecting the SDI cable and then re-connecting it. I think we have a lemon K-box. The tech here is looking into getting it replaced. It’s not even a month old.
    Thanks again for the help.
    Cheers.
